Born in the Netherlands, Mien Ruys (1904-98) is one of the unsung heroes of twentieth century landscape design. In 1943 she joined a group of architects known as De en Opbau, the groups design philosophy considered functionalism of primary importance and the use of decorative elements secondary. Her work has a distinct sculptural quality that is softened by the use of grasses and perennials. She remains influential today with designers Piet Odoulf, James Van Sweden and Anthony Paul, all having reference to Ruys in their work.
